In Lonoke County, Arkansas, nestled along an oxbow lake on the Arkansas River, lies the Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park. Originally thought to have been constructed by the Toltec peoples of Mexico, these mounds were constructed by constructing piles of dirt, rock, and other materials into natural land surfaces. Later anthropological research led to the discovery that these mounds, like other sites in North America, had been built by the ancestors of North American indigenous peoples, the Plum Bayou Culture.

Today, visitors can tour these historic Native American grounds and learn more about how the Mound building people lived and interacted with their natural environments.

Exploring the Site:

There are several ways to explore the Toltec Mounds site. Hike the Knapp Trail or the Plum Bayou Trail to see the three surviving mound sites and the locations where the complete 18 once stood. Walk along the lake in the area and learn about the canoe that was discovered there, and how Plum Bayou people would have traveled along the waterways. Tour guides are also available to share additional information about mound sites and the Native Americans who inhabited the area over a thousand years ago. After touring the site, stop at the visitors center to see additional exhibits and learn more about the archeological work, research, and discoveries found at the site.

Educational Connections:

The Toltec site is also a great resources for parents and educators. The guides there have developed several great materials for learners to use while researching or exploring the park. Using the Plum Bayou trail guide, visitors can learn more at each stop along their hike.
